SMART
(Start Making A Reader Today) envisions an Oregon where every child is able to read and is empowered to succeed. To achieve this we engage community volunteers to read one-on-one weekly with PreK through third-grade children who are selected by their schools to participate. Children in the program also receive new books each month to keep and read with their families. The SMART program model was developed 27 years ago and combines early childhood reading support, adult mentorship, book ownership, and community engagement to positively impact literacy outcomes for our state.
